Nat is 9

Happy 9th birthday to my Munchkin!

At 9, you are a diva in the making as you enter your tweens, starting to be more assertive. Or maybe you're just testing my patience by saying no all the time!

You are still a sweet, dependable little girl but can sometimes be selfish especially when it comes to sharing things with Sasha. Do show her more affection because she absolutely adores you.
You enjoy your peace and solitude, you sleep like a log, you can watch anything on TV, you're fussy but you eat like ur Zodiac pig...sometimes I'm amazed at how similar we are!

It's interesting watching your personality develop and I can't wait to see what the future holds for you. Love you to bits and may all your birthday wishes come true!

XOXO,
Mummy

The Enormous Turnip

Sasha had a ballet trial at United Square today and I brought her on my own. Was apprehensive she would be clingy when I dropped her off, but thankfully she didn’t cry throughout the 45mins she was on her own.
When asked if she enjoyed it, it was a vehement ‘no!’ She claimed she had no space to dance and from what I gathered, she was more an observer than a participant. Am not sure I actually want to sign her up for ballet, she likes to dance freestyle at home but it’s a long term commitment to actually do this for a few years and I’m not sure she has that much of an interest…it’s more Mildred wanting her to join.

Nat hasn’t fully recovered but we took precautions bringing her out today. We had a date with ‘The Enormous Turnip’ in the afternoon together with Sasha and Gigi at the Alliance Francais and the girls enjoyed themselves immensely.

The play was funny and interactive, the story deviated a little from the original but there were some lessons and values to be learned. Sasha was laughing her head off, she found the play really funny.
It was a local cast and at the end, they invited some kids from the audience to help pull out the turnip but none of ours volunteered. What’s new?

Get well soon my bubba

Nat is down with a high fever, we spent several hours at KKH last night when she couldn’t hold down anything, even her paracetamol when the fever exceeded 39 deg celcius.
Poor girl was slightly dehydrated according to the doc and instead of the electrolyte solution being given over 1 hr, we had to complete 2 hours before we could go home.

She had seemed fine during the day so the fever was quite sudden. We had taken a bus to town while Nick brought Sasha for a developmental check at the polyclinic. Lunch was at Wheelock’s NYDC and she even posed for photos near the fountain.
After that she followed me to the Baby Fair at Expo, she was thrilled to take the train but in the late afternoon she felt tired and looked a little blah, and by the time we got home, she opted to nap instead of having her dinner and then she started puking.
Her fever has been pretty high throughout today but no other symptoms so far…Nick is paranoid about dengue and I had a slight scare just now when her fever spiked to 40 degs along with blotchy arms, racing heart, cold hands and feet etc making me a little paranoid about meningitis.

But the ibuprofen has finally kicked in and I can breathe easy for now because at one point she woke up, smiled at me and mouthed L-O-V-E. Aww, my sweet little munchkin.

So far Sasha hasn’t caught anything and I hope it stays that way. She’s so eager to learn this one! Mummy has been teaching them to count in Malay and she can go up to almost 20. She can spell a few words like cat, dog, pig, cow, egg and whatever Nat is learning, she wants in too, so in a way it’s good, I kill 2 birds with one stone.
She really likes to draw fairies and princesses, she holds the pen awkwardly but it gets done in the end. She can draw her shapes from circle, square, triangle and write some letters and draw a flower too, so I would say she’s got fine motor skills.

At her developmental check yesterday, she’s apparently tall for her age and her weight is about 15.5kg. She’s starting to go to the toilet on her own, as she can now hoist herself up on the toilet bowl but she still asks for help to fold/tuck her dress so she doesn’t soil it.

I still need to do something about her temper. Anytime she feels someone is laughing at her or just raises their voice a bit, she storms off. She’s aware of her colouring allergies and now sticks to chocolate on her own free will unless I tell her something is safe.

She’s very attached to her small koala stuffed toy when she sleeps for some reason, it’s a new development and she’ll even wake up in the middle of the night looking for Koala if she can’t feel it within reach!
As for Nat, school holidays have started and a few days ago we had a parent-teacher meeting at her school with her teachers Mrs Koh and Lu-laoshi. She's diligent and well-behaved but they also notice her shyness and self-consciousness and sensitiveness when told not to do something. She refrains from answering questions even if she might know the answer and never volunteers to present in front of her classmates.
They said she didn't like PE for a spell, but now she enjoys it...she gets upset when coaches change. Her handwriting is neat and they say she is good in her drawing, which we concur. She and Gigi are separated in class otherwise they would be chatting away.

A couple of weeks ago Nat asked me if boys could kiss girls, apparently she had a Filipino classmate named Gian who had a crush on her and was very affectionate. I asked the teachers about the situation and they say he has moved on, LOL. But they had told the boy not to disturb her.

Her Chinese is slightly better than Gigi's so they think she is doing alright. They are not too concerned that she doesn't read proper sentences yet, as they have yet to introduce 'blending' so I don't need to be kiasu and push her just yet. My target is end of the year.

Look Ma, I'm on TV!

The clips the girls filmed on Sunday have been edited and Gigi, Nat, Sasha and Riley all appeared in today’s episode of Zoom Zim Zam.

Sasha said ‘V for Van’ and “W for Whale’, while Nat said ‘Watermelon’. They got so excited seeing themselves on TV, tomorrow they will be on again for XYZ.

Lights, camera, action...again!

Kavi held an emergency recording session today for Zoom Zim Zam, some of her other recorded clips for the alphabet sounds could not be used because the kids’ clothes didn’t stand out on the green screen.

So she rounded up her nieces to help record more alphabet sounds for the final remaining alphabets and I can’t wait to see Nat and Sasha on TV again. They were practicing their XYZs at home but when it came time for their close-ups, only Sasha was not shy.
She was quite enthusiastic in saying her phonic sounds and what the alphabets stood for while Nat was soooooo super shy and kept mumbling and looking down. She was so self-conscious because of other people in the room. Once they had contributed their bit, we went to Marina Square for lunch at the food court.

Nick had come back yesterday but before he arrived, the girls and I had whiled the time away in Membina, everyone dressed in rainbow colours.

Had impromptu supper with Swana and Kevin at Sin Hoi Sai, coincidentally both boys wore orange Holland t-shirts. There was a slight commotion when a large group of diners came in midway through our meal, apparently there was a celebrity among them.
We found out later it was Richie Ren. I didn’t recognise him with his dreadlocks but I have hummed along to his songs in karaoke sessions!

3 secs of fame

Nat had her 3 seconds of fame today when she appeared on an episode of Zoom Zim Zam, which Kavi produced and is currently running on Okto. This was a clip taken at the audition session months ago, where Nat said several alphabets and today's letter was L and she said 'L for Lampshade', although it actually sounded like 'lampshake'!

Germ's flea market

Germaine and Joanne had plans to sell stuff as part of a flea market at Germaine’s office today but plans went awry due to miscommunication and the two fell out before the event started! Nonetheless, Germaine proceeded with her event and I went to kaypoh since it was just in the neighbourhood at Kampong Bahru.
I brought some stuff to display including a Prada bag and her friend bought $20 worth of tops from me, which I channelled back into buying some stuff from Germs, lol. Nat was with me and she was soooooo clingy.

She was so emo last weekend when Nick accidentally threw away Gigi’s science experiment…they had been growing towgay in school in Yakult bottles. Gigi’s one had turned mouldy and Nick threw it in the bin.

When Nat found out, she was worried Gigi would get in trouble and cried before sleeping. So me and Nick made a new one for Gigi, borrowing some sprouts from Nat’s bottle and tried to make it look as close to the original but we only had a Vitagen bottle and I had to find a sticker label. But all’s well that ends well and since then, we grew some of our own sprouts at home to show her the cycle since hers didn’t thrive either.
In the evening we went to Membina for dinner, to meet Judy and Jayna one more time before they headed back to Sydney. Left the bubs with the grandmas and maids and the cousins had a tzechar dinner at the coffeeshop downstairs. The food was surprisingly decent and the girls had a ball blowing bubbles when we got back.

MexOut

Nat has been a bit of a fashionista of late, after she figured out how to pin a floral brooch on herself. Bought her a necklace on Sunday, similar to the one Ma bought Sasha on Nick’s birthday and she pairs them up on her nightie or whatever outfit she’s wearing for the day. My very own mini SJP!
Met Phil for lunch today, there was a new Mexican joint in the CBD I wanted to check out and he met me and another colleague there. It’s called MexOut at Pekin St and I’ve been thinking about tacos of late. It didn’t disappoint but a meal can come up to 20 bucks with chips and a drink, which is expensive considering it’s self-service and has a bit of fast food concept.

My corn tacos came in a set of 3, I could mix and match my meat fillings and toppings. So I had 2 chargrilled chicken and 1 with pulled pork. I also tried with 2 different salsas, the salsa fresca and the mango pineapple. The pork was a tad salty but I thoroughly enjoyed the meal, maybe because I had been thinking of tacos, but at least it didn’t disappoint. Mmmm, I think a return visit is in order.

Phil kindly walked me back to the office, helping to carry a goodie bag from Dean and Deluca that he bought for me to thank me for helping him over the past couple of years. How sweet! A very thoughtful gift because he knows I like cooking and in the bag was an assortment of spices, a packet of pasta, gummies, Dutch cocoa powder and an apron! Love it!

Sasha is 3!

The pumpkin is officially 3 years old, my baby is getting so big so fast and soon won’t be the baby of the family anymore!
At 3, my precocious little toddler fancies herself a Picasso, she keeps drawing a ‘princess’ – a head, some hair and a long, long gown but it’s actually quite clear that the drawing is of a girl so I am quite impressed. She is even starting to scribble some alphabets like N, O, S, A and H.

We’ve switched her to the Enfakid formula so now she and Nat drink the same thing. She’s been biting/sucking her fingers of late, am not sure whether it’s a habit or whether her molars are growing. I think she’s teething a little. She can brush her own teeth, but I still supervise as she has a tendency to eat the toothpaste on purpose.
She and Nat have dropped Snow White and Cinderella like hot bricks, it’s all about Barbie now! Geraldine has named them Barbie 3 and 1 respectively, Gigi is Barbie 2 and Lita is Barbecue! Lol.

As Sasha grows, she is getting more petulant and pouty. I know I should really nip it in the bud but she’s so cute when she’s angry! She’s reduced her tantrums but she likes to scold people or ‘jeling’ and is very selfish with her things. She’s quite stingy, she won’t share her biscuits or sweets, at most she gives you 1 measly piece.
She’s very particular with her pillows, must have them in their precise positions nightly and also when she flips her blanket, she’ll keep doing it over and over until it’s perfectly covering her and not crumpled in any corners….damn anal!

But she’s generally a happy-go-lucky child, her deep giggles are infectious, she loves to dance and has been ballerina-ing of late, she’s quite keen to pick up ballet I think. She also loves to sing so I think I should encourage that musical aspect.

Nat meanwhile likes to draw and colour but refuses to attend any kind of formal class to hone her skill, I think she could be quite an artist given the right direction. I’ve stopped her from calling Gigi on a daily basis, checking if her cousin is going to school…she’s very insecure without her but she’s adjusted to the no calling rule…at least until the next time Gigi ‘pontengs’!

I took leave today to spend the day with her. Mildred came over and after Nat left for school, me, Ma, Sasha and Mildred headed to Vivo for lunch at Shin Kushiya. I shared a tempura udon with Sasha and ordered her some kushiyaki to go along with it, she loved her ‘Japanese noodles’ as she calls it.
Had a gynae visit in the afternoon, no nice ultrasound to share but basically Jr is fine and growing well. Dr Siow estimates he’s about 1 kg now. Super active, am getting kicked left, right and centre. Really starting to feel the weight, I can’t walk as fast I as I used to and sometimes I even waddle!

Still no adverse symptoms of any kind, unless you count incontinence when I sneeze on a full bladder, lol! My stomach looks like 8 months when I am only 26 weeks. Sleep is getting uncomfortable though.

I’ve put on about 7-8 kg since the beginning so am only allowing myself 4 more. The weather has been so hot that I’m eating more ice cream (for the calcium of course!) but there are no cravings and really nothing that I don’t eat at the moment.

Picked up Nat and Gigi from school, I can’t believe Gigi wore this hairband all day!
Joanne and Rayhan popped by in the evening to join our home celebration. We had a simple dinner of chicken curry and bolognaise, I ordered Sasha a small vanilla lychee princess cake from Bengawan and she was a little confused because she thought her birthday was over and doesn’t know you can cut cake more than once!
