It's wedding season!

This past weekend I attended the first of 3 weddings spaced a fortnight apart...there goes my bank account!

My childhood friend Edwina married her long-time boyfriend Simon on Saturday in an Anglican church ceremony. This was followed by dinner on Sunday night at Amara Hotel.

Edwina is Chindian like me and Swana, and she has a sister too so the 4 of us would play and hang when we were younger - our fathers used to work together at the Seamen of Singapore organisation. Sadly, Edwina's father Uncle Charles passed away several years ago from asthma so he wasn't there to give away his daughter, though I'm sure he was smiling from above.

Anyways, me and Nutty wore matching outfits for the church ceremony which was held at a basement chapel of St. Andrew's Cathedral. The bride looked lovely of course and I shed a tear as she walked down the aisle and I remembered Uncle Charles.

The ceremony was a little different from a Catholic one and it was over fairly quick. However, there was an incident during the tea reception that marred my enjoyment of the wedding.

Basically, there were small rectangular tables arranged in a foyer for people to sit and eat, and each one could only take about 6 persons. Me, Arlyn, Ma and Nutty had parked ourselves at one and occupied about half the space. When Mummy went to get food, a family of 6 descended on our table and started planting themselves on the available seats.

While I didn't mind sharing, they did not pause to ask if the seats were available and started dragging more chairs to accommodate their brood. They were even eyeing Mummy's seat but I parked Nutty's diaper bag to deter any chair-stealers.

Ma elbowed out of her own table!

It was a tight fit squeezing 9 around a table meant for 4-6, but they were oblivious to our discomfort, choosing to eat into our personal space and slowly but surely nudged us to the corners, leaving little elbow room. We have a long way to go before becoming a gracious society!!!

Suffice it to say, we didn't linger and left shortly after finishing our meal, but not before snapping some pictures with the bridal couple. Their wedding cake was topped with an interracial couple, how cute!

The festivities continued the next day at the banquet dinner. Don't ask me why the two events were not held on the same day - something about auspicious days and church policies.

Dinner was an 8-course feast at Amara Hotel, we could have walked there! I wore one of my JC Penney purchases, a multi-coloured printed dress. Am still undecided if the dress is 'busy in a nice way' or just plain gaudy!

The dinner programme had me puzzled though, Nick calls it bad planning. At 8.30 pm - which is pretty standard - the couple walked in. They did the usual cake cutting and this was followed by a speech from the bride's best friend.

Just when our stomachs were rumbling and we hoped the first course would be served, we were thrown a curve ball when it was announced that we would be 'yum senging' next! We had to wait for the groom to pop the champagne bottle, wait for the family members to get on stage, and instead of 3 'yum sengs', there were 4!

It was a little disorganised to be honest. Did I mention that we had to sit at a different table than originally assigned because some people decided to sit where they please?

Once dinner started though, the courses moved along fairly quick. I couldn't resist taking a picture of our fish dish. Instead of the usual sea bass or tilapia, we got cod but not just any cod, mind you. Usually we see them in steak or fillet form, but this was a whole slab!

I found the ballroom carpet interesting too, it was full of words and not a floral or geometric print. Nick forgot where we parked and I made a $10 bet with Kevin on the location, he was sure it was B1 but it was actually B2. When I followed Nick to Pierre while the rest waited in the lobby, I snapped a picture for Kevin to prove I was right. The money though was used for cab fare since Pierre didn't have space for all of us.

Waiting for a cab is another story! I know it sounds like I'm complaining a lot but I can't help it. Not only did we wait over 20 mins, we got cut off twice by inconsiderate people who popped out of nowhere, I couldn't get through to call a cab and there was this pushy 'ang moh' woman who zig-zagged across both sides of the road trying to steal cabs.

Whenever she saw a green light, she would just cross the road and wait in front of someone else. How rude! I heard she's actually a local tourist guide.

Anyway, it will be Nick's cousin Xinyi's wedding on F1 day, what shall I wear???
