Almost 2

Nat is just one month shy of turning 2, and has decided she wants an Elmo cake for her birthday next month.

Ask her how old she is now and she'll answer '22 months', although we need to update her to 23. She's getting better at articulating her needs and wants, forming sentences like, "I cannot reach", "Daddy put no more monkey jump on bed CD", "I don't want Great-mama house", "I'm going home now", "I go back Spottiswoode Park", "I see doctor now", "I want some more bread/biscuit" and can sing '1, 2 buckle my shoe' and count to 10. Actually she can count to 14 already, and prefers to put on and remove her shoes herself.

She's constantly reminding Nick to put on the child lock in the car by saying 'Daddy, child lock, child lock', however she hates getting into her car seat these days. If I'm not bribing her with unopened lollipops and my lipsticks, she'll squirm out before the seat belts can be fastened. She'll try to climb over to the driver's seat and fiddle with the car's gadgets. Most times we don't start driving till she is safely buckled in, but occasionally I've had to threaten with sending her to the naughty corner if she still hasn't sat in the car seat by the time we hit the main road.

She doesn't like sitting in her stroller much either, preferring to be carried. My Lulu Guinness Maclaren stroller has become an expensive diaper bag caddy instead. Have only succeeded getting her strapped in once or twice, again by letting her play with my lipstick.

Her molars have been causing her grief these past few weeks, she's always putting her fingers in her mouth to dig and the saliva gives her a rash on her chin. She loves looking at her boogers when they're removed, she calls it 'kulangut', which is the Tagalog word Arlyn uses. When I use blunt tweezers to clean her nose, she'll volunteer for more with 'I want some more'.

For some reason she likes to wear half a shape sorter toy as a helmet, and she carries around her box set of nursery rhymes like a doctor's bag.

She can remember people we've met months or weeks ago, recalling Uncle Alvin whenever you ask her who bought her kookaburra. Last night she suddenly said she wanted to see Baby Ethan and recited the names of Ananya, Riley and Uncle Siva whom she last saw on Christmas day.

She likes to irritate Gigi but at the same time, she's really sweet with her. When Gigi climbs a chair, she'll go, 'Careful Gigi'. Other times she'll beat Gigi's bum and say, "I beat your bum bum". When she used to give Gigi a peck on the cheeks, we always gushed and said 'Aw, so sweet' and now she says it herself. Each time she kisses Gigi, after each kiss she will say 'Sooo schweet'.

She'll help Gigi to put on her shoes or place her feet on Gigi's tricycle footrest but can be sneaky too in the sense of making Gigi go first when trying something new. Like yesterday, Nick was trying to feed her a new medicine through a syringe and she pushed it away and said, "Gigi's turn'.

In the end, Nick caved and opened the lollipop I had given her to hold and she looked all pleased with her new sweet. I flipped and tried all sorts of ways to take the lollipop back, she protested of course and I 'accidentally' dropped it on the floor to stop her from having any more.

The reason she was taking medication was because she currently has a phlegmy cough and Nick insisted on seeing a doctor even though I felt it wasn't necessary, since it will go away on its own in a few days. Plus we had some Prospan cough syrup at home and she had only been taking it for a day, not long enough to see any results but he didn't want to wait.

Doctor said her lungs were clear and the cough syrup we had was fine and that it would need a few days for the cough to get better. Essentially all the stuff I told Nick but he wouldn't listen! We waited almost 2 hours to see the doctor only for him agree with whatever I had been doing but Nick HAD to hear it from a 'professional'! The doctor sensed the kancheong daddy wanted more effective medication so he prescribed a mucus dissolvant, but it wasn't really necessary.

On the bright side, she seems to have overcome her fear of doctors, I prepared her on what to expect i.e. checking of temperature, heartbeat and throat and demonstrated at home, and when she went inside the consultation room, there were no tears...although she still refused to open her mouth.

It would appear she has shoplifting tendencies as well, ha ha. Was at Watson's yesterday and she grabbed some packs of Winnie the Pooh towels displayed outside the store. When told we had to pay for them first, she went, "Nevermind, nevermind!". She doesn't know what context to use 'nevermind' but she seems to love the phrase.

With Christmas and all, she's discovered reindeers and will ask for Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer to be sung to her almost every night.

At 16 months, Gigi finally has some teeth! And in time for Christmas too! She can say, "thank you", "Elmo", 'Daddy", "Mummy", "Papa", "Mama", "Ann", "sit down", "Gigi", "Arlyn", "Nat", "Nick", "Mao", "garlic", "onion", "rabbit" and "ribbit" - for frog. She'll go 'try, try' whenever you're eating something, but she hates to eat fruits and drink water.

She's trying so hard to talk more but ends up babbling very loudly in restaurants just spouting gibberish. The pacifier is never far from her, I hear from Swana she even reaches out for it blindly in the middle of the night if it's removed from her mouth.

She does the cutest blinks, especially with those gorgeous lashes of hers. She likes to bop too and adores Elmo. Swana uses Elmo DVDs to distract her during mealtimes, Kevin and her are complete opposites to me and Nick in terms of parenting style. I would say they are more relaxed in the sense that she watches TV, she has no fixed routine, they let her try all sorts of rubbish food, they don't enforce the car seat, she's very attached to Mummy, Swana and Kevin and suffers seperation anxiety on occasion.

Swana thinks she's gonna suffer from middle child syndrome once I pop, I sure hope not! We have to pay extra attention to her and Nat once the baby comes along. Just 3 months to go...

Birthday Mommies

Mummy and Mildred celebrated their 57th and 59th birthdays respectively today, and us kids brought them for a seafood dinner at New Ubin Seafood Restaurant at Sin Ming.

Ben has been going there regularly and not long ago Kevin mentioned them after spotting an ad in the New Paper so we decided to give it a try. Ben helped to make the booking and we pre-ordered the menu to save on time. They don't charge corkage so we brought 3 bottles of wine too.

Everything we tried was good, and the price was really reasonable considering the amount of dishes. We had prawn rolls, pacific clams, kai lan, steamed fish, roast chicken, salted egg yolk squid, fried mee suah, chili crab, white pepper crab, deep fried butter prawns and orh nee. All for $270 nett for 10 adults, including drinks!

This is the last of the new year/ Xmas feasting, except for dinner tomorrow with Baba to celebrate Ma's birthday again...gonna let the stomach rest for a while till CNY!

New Year's Day 2010

Wanted to have breakfast at East Coast this morning but landed up at ViVo where we had the very oily Long John Silver's breakfast platters. We were joined by Ma, the Dopes and Gigi, and the kids loved exploring the play area outside the restaurant.

Thereafter it was off to Best Denki to get Ma her birthday pressie...we settled on a Canon Ixus digital camera. I know she would have preferred a digital camcorder so she can record the antics of her grandchildren but she and technology don't exactly get along and we figured we'd end up doing all the work of downloading and editing...this way she can still record since the camera has a high definition recording function but it would be a lot simpler for her to operate.

In the evening, we headed to AMK for a last minute dinner with Mildred and her former charge's family. They were there to celebrate her birthday in advance and so we got to meet Cato and Cara again.

Cara is just under 3 months younger than Nat but still quite babylike....she's so chubby and cute, reminds me a little of Winnie the Pooh somehow! She has a strong set of lungs though, as displayed when she thought Nat was 'stealing' her toys. Technically they were Nat's toys which Mildred keeps at AMK but Cara doesn't understand about sharing yet so she screamed whenever something was taken away from her.

Nat would just look on in bewilderment and go play with something else, I was thinking my daughter was quite an angel in comparison...well, at least we didn't have to stamp out any tantrums or discipline her in front of other people. Phew!

We are off to the Nathans' place in a bit for a small new year's day party...am feeling a tad peckish, hope there's food!

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010

And so here we are on the very last day of 2009...it's been a tumultuous year economy-wise but it looks like recovery is on track. It was a historic year, with the inauguration of the first black US president and it was a shocking year in entertainment, with the sudden death of Michael Jackson and the infidelities of Tiger Woods coming to light.

On the work front, it was the year I changed portfolio to marketing and got to travel for work. On the personal front, I fulfilled a lifetime desire to visit Greece, made a baby and observed Nat's second year of life.

She's grown so much in the last 12 months, already I get misty-eyed thinking of her as an adult and getting married and leaving home etc but that's still a long way off!

We didn't do much all day, I brought her down to the playground in the morning and she played on her slide in the afternoon.

In the evening we headed to town, which was surprisingly quiet in my book. We had tea at Borders Cafe and fed Nat her dinner there but she refused to sit in the high chair. I ordered some bruschetta but it was not lemony enough for me.

Shopped at Isetan a bit, where I was 'forced' to buy Nat a toy fish after she tore the packaging.

Had a simple dinner of mee siam at Membina before coming home to have a quiet countdown. Actually we were supposed to babysit Gigi while her parents went out but she started screaming once she got to our house and the Dopes had to come back for her. Nat knew there was going to be fireworks at Mount Faber and we tried to let her stay up for them, but in the end she crashed at 11pm.

Have decided not to make any resolutions for next year because I know I won't adhere to them. 2010 is going to be interesting what with a new baby and all, can't wait to meet Natasha Sonali Lim!

Yes, that's the name for now after much deliberation but it could still change once she's out! I think Sonali's more or less confirmed, it means 'golden' but Natasha doesn't have any Greek origin which was what I would prefer so we could still revert back to Nikita, Nicola, Nicolette or Nora depending on what she looks like.

PS: The fireworks at Mount Faber was sucky, really low budget this year. We could see the tops of explosions from Sentosa and Labrador Park too but they didn't shoot them high enough...so anti-climatic...lucky Nat didn't stay up!

Pot luck reunion

The SingTel alumni (except Crispian who still works there!) gathered at Desmond and Chen Tze's house earlier this evening for a pot luck pre-New Year party. I contributed chicken curry, and there was shepherd's pie, chicken wings, otah, beef stew, pizza, donuts, potato salad etc.

Nat got to hook up with Cameron again and promptly raided his toy box. He was good natured about it, such a 'kwai' little boy.

It was fun seeing everyone, though I didn't get to chat much having to keep an eye on Nat. Juliana brought her 5-year old niece and had to entertain her too so it was mostly the men who mingled!

Michael had good news to share, he'll be a daddy in the second half of 2010...that makes his the 13th or 14th baby I know due next year!

Baby Tristan woke up midway through the party and joined us in his rocker. Nat kept kissing him, though I tried to stop her...she loves babies! I really do think she's gonna be an awesome big sister, especially after having Gigi around.

Jeannie took a nice family photo of us, I love it! Notice the hair? Got it re-done on Monday after a lousy cheapo haircut before Xmas....ah, the difference between a $16 and a $60 one.

Yellow Christmas Tree

Nat loves this Christmas tree at ViVo which we can see part of from our balcony window...so we brought her for one final look before the Christmas decorations are taken down. At the beginning of the month, she called Christmas trees 'key key key' but now she can say 'kiss mass twee'. This one is 'yellow kiss mass twee' to her.

I don't have to work from Thursday onwards...start of a 4-day weekend. This past month has been bliss, we really got to spend a fair bit of time with Nat whilst on leave and come January it's back to the daily grind. Will make it up to her during maternity leave...

Christmas 2009

When Nat woke up on Christmas morning, she was in for a treat as she got to open all her presents. I bought her some plastic fruits and vegetables, plus a Winnie the Pooh recliner chair from Toys R Us which she loves...it's quite comfy. But the highlight was a slide I bought at the last minute, also from Toys R Us.

At first she didn't want to go on it but now she can't get enough!

She gave her daddy some handkerchiefs as a pressie and he was also rewarded with a big kiss.

Went for mass at Christ the King and then had an early lunch with Mildred at Crystal Jade before heading to the Jayanandans' for lunch part 2.

It was baby central, what with Riley, Ananya, Nat and Gigi and we even got a '3 men and a baby' pose courtesy of Kevin, Siva and Kumar.

Dinner was at Toh Yi with the Gomez family and Nat and Gigi entertained all the adults with their antics. At one point, they spun round and round on Ann's study chair, cheap thrill!

Today I went to Ethan's 1st month party, hitching a ride with Adrian and Rena since Nat was under the weather.

Jane seems to have lost more weight from 2 weeks ago and it was so funny to see her so motherly and fussing over the baby when he cried at one point. Poor thing had his hair and eyebrows shaved, am sure they'll grow back in no time. Food was catered from Mum's Kitchen, you can count on the food being nice...I had 3 rounds!
